Ben Franklin and his son tied a metal rod to a kite. An iron key was attached to the end of the cord. He also attached a silk string to the end of the cord where the key was and held on to that. The metal rod drew electricity from the storm clouds. When the rain got the kite and cord wet, that electricity was conducted from the rod to the key.
